02/09/2007 Archived Article: "Iberian Ibex spotted in campo of Gaucin"

Ibexiv207 (28k image)Peter Rennemann, a German wildlife enthusiast and archer, took these photos of the Iberian Ibex in the campo southwest of the pueblo. He had tried, with no luck, to find them in Gaucin 2 years ago, but this January, 2007, he not only spotted the ibex but got close enough for these spectacular shots. He says that the ibex make Gaucin very special, a big attraction for wildlife photographers. The pictures were taken with a Canon Rebell camera, with a 80-200 zoom (not very big.) Herr Rennemann saw the Ibex with binoculars from the country house where he was staying with friends; he managed to sneak up on the Ibex, and hid, as they went down to the grassland. There was a herd of 16-18 Ibex, 2 big males, and 2 medium large males. They come down around 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. can be seen from the road where the restaurant is, and from the ruin on the other side from the hill, where the water spring is. Perhaps the ibex are tamer this year for 2 reasons: 1. the "dry" period last summer, and 2. the goat shepherd had less aggressive dogs.

Peter Rennemann lives in Willebadessen, Germany, where he has an archery shop and teaches archery. He can be contacted at info@bogenstuebchen.de, and his web page is www.bogenstuebchen.de.
