Deerhound breeders John and Jane Powell have their kennel in the Gaucín campo, and are introducing this gorgeous and gentle dog to Spain. Kilborne Maggie (in the photo) has been wowing judges and spectators alike at dog shows all over Spain for the last 2 years, and gained the title at the equivalent of Crufts in Madrid last year.
The kennel was founded 3 years ago when the Powells imported 2 bitches and a dog from the world renowned Kilbourne Deerhounds in England, combining the top U:K: and European bloodlines. The first litter of puppies was born 2 months ago, 6 bitches and 4 dogs, now available to good homes.
The deerhound breed can be traced back to the 16th century when it was used to hunt red deer. For those living in the country and plagued by deer, the deerhound is the ultimate solution. When deerhounds move in, deer have the sense to move out.
In the age of chivalry only those with the rank of earl or above were allowed to own deerhound. Today the deerhound is frequently seen on stage and screen, from Mid Summer Night´s Dream to Harry Potter. The deerhound is one of the few breeds that has not altered with the passage of time, and can still do the job they were bred for centuries ago. The quarry has diversified, and in America they are used to hunt wolves, coyotes and rabbits, and in Australia, the wild boar. The deerhound combines agility, speed and strength with a grace and beauty that is breath-taking.
