06/20/2007 Archived Article: "A new Mayor was elected June 16 in a Municipal Meeting"
There was great anticipation in Gaucín, and more than 300 people attended the act in the Town Hall, which meant that everyone couldn´t fit in the Salón de Actos, and had to wait outside in the lobby, on the stairs or in the street.
It was clear that most of those in attendance were supporters of the PSOE or the PP, and not the PA, despite its having received the most votes. During the Pleno the townsfolk behaved ideally, respecting everyone´s turn to speak, applauding each speaker, and remaining silent during the speeches. Only one person, a supporter of the now ex-Mayor Francisco Corbacho & husband of a delegate on his list, wanted to boicot the meeting and expressed his opinion with shouts, but the rest of the audience glared at him and he was removed from the Salón de Actos by the Municipal Police. The rest of the audience had an ideal democratic comportment for which they are to be congratulated. Teodoro de Molina was elected Mayor Uyt three votes from the PSOE, 2 from the PP and 4 votes against by the PA. His first act as Mayor was to allow representatives of the other parties to speak.
Francisco Corbacho, the now ex Mayor, spoke first, and called the new coalition government traitors. He said that his government has left 300.000€ in different accounts, but he didn´t mention the debts accumulated during his reign. He claimed that big projects, such as a funeral home, an old age center, a Cultural Center, etc., are in progress with funding approved thanks to his work. Also, Corbacho thanked all the functionaries except for one, and noted that if anyone wanted to criticize him, one should criticize oneself. He did not show the normal humility that politicians have on quitting a post, or apologize for any errors committed during his reign. Alter this speech, the new mayor, Teodoro de Molina, spoke. He promised to be an impartial leader and thanked everyone for participating in the elections. He announced that he would begin his reign by stopping any activities ion the Town Hall that contributed to the deficit, beginning with closing the radio station, which he said was a wonderful social instrument but which had been used of late to insult, manipulate and disinform the listeners.
The session ended with the presentation of the baton of leadership and a ceremonial hug. Everyone left the Town Hall at peace, and all of the participants were applauded when they went out into the street. --- text contributed by Jesús Balsa Pascual
