02/26/2008 Archived Article: "Activities planned for the “PROJECT RECOVERY OF BIRDS NESTS”"

Activities planned are the following:
February 28: Workshop Fabricating Nests, in the Peña Flamenca.
March 8: Lecture "Birds of the Serrania de Ronda," in the Convent.
March 9: Placement of nests on the facades.

The exact times will be published later. The general idea of the project is to help swallows, swifts and housemartins to nest in Gaucín, in order to make the village even more attractive.

The project consists of placing strips of wood as support for the nest, an artificial nest as a teaser and protective platform to catch the excrement.
Many people have already offered the facades of their houses for the installation of nests, but above all we would like to count on those who already have or have had a nest in their houses. Birds like to return to the same place where they were born.

If you have or have had nests and want to keep them, let us know so we can help you clean the façade. Do call any of the following numbers: 617692784 Balsa Jesus, Ana Medina 687497777 or 658612989 Julian. Increasing the number of nests in the streets will help maintain our natural heritage and may attract more tourists.

On February 28 a workshop will be held in the Peña Flamenco for the fabrication of the artificial nests, nests of mud for swallows and wooden boxes for swifts. You're very welcome to help us make the nests and/or to bring materials for their production, like old balls of 18cm diameter, mud, wooden planks.

On 08 March you're welcome to attend a lecture in the convent on "Birds of the Serrania de Ronda" by bird specialists Juan Luis Munoz and Peter Jones.

Finally, on March 9, we want to place brackets and the first nests on the facades, relying on the help of anyone who wants to come with their ladders.
It will be a great pleasure to count on your cooperation in any of these activities. And remember, it's all for the benefit of Gaucin. ---Julián van der Schaaf
